Apple have now cited that the iPad 3 release date will be 2012. It was very unlikely that Apple would have released a new iPad in the very same year that iPad 2 was launched. However, an unnamed insider source in Apple has indicated that iPad 2 had been a rush job and hence Apple was striving to release the iPad 3 in 2011 itself.
